As a result, they are in great demand as speakers. Over the past forty years, Lotus Gemology gemologists have given more than 100 presentations around the world covering topics including ruby and sapphire, spinel, jade, gemstone origin determination, treatment determination, and more.

Popular Topics

Ruby & Sapphire: A Collector's Guide

For centuries rubies and sapphire have been among the most coveted of gemstones, and for good reason. From their natural creation to their cultural symbolism, we provide an overview the natural and cultural history of rubies and sapphires from around the world. We guide the audience with a connoisseur's eye, explaining what collectors should look for, and what to avoid. Find out why these alluring gems continue to be used as popular stores of wealth and are symbols of royalty to this day.

Inside Out: Journey into the Center of a Gem

Precious gemstones are celebrated for the outward beauty, particularly for shining colors that capture our attention. Beyond their fascinating beauty, each of Mother Nature’s gems encapsulates part of Earth’s history, a story millions of years in the making. Join us on a journey into this hidden space inside of a gemstone. Together we will explore the microscopic depths of rubies and sapphires, seeing a world that most have never glimpsed.

This topic is great both as a stand-alone lecture and as an introduction to microscopy workshops led by our gemologists.

Jade: China's Gift to the World

Jade has been treasured by the Chinese for some 8,000 years. Yù (玉), the Chinese word for jade, is one of the oldest in the Chinese language; its pictograph is distinguished from that for “ruler” only by one dot. Outside of China, people generally think of jade as the jadeite jade from Burma, where the finest quality is a vivid green. Within China, however, jade is a stone of an entirely different character, with the finest quality being white. Lotus Gemology offers a brief survey of the places jadeite and nephrite come from and then delve into the real Chinese jade, the true “Stone of Heaven.”

Sapphire Isle: Madagascar Sapphire

Over the past 25 years, no country in the world has produced as much fine sapphire as Madagascar. And yet this island's gems are still relatively unknown. Lotus Gemology gemologists have made multiple visits to the sapphire mines in Madagascar and will introducte the audience to this isle that has become one of the world's most important sources of gems. The lecture also covers the gemology of Madagascar sapphire and ruby, including the most important identifying features, and results from a series of experiments our laboratory has conducted on the heat treatment of Madagascar sapphire.
