Blaue saphire aus Malawi

Blue sapphires from Malawi
Journal Article
Henn, U. and Bank, H. (1990) Blaue saphire aus Malawi. [Blue sapphires from Malawi] Zeitschrift der Deutschen Gemmologischen Gesellschaft, Vol. 39, No. 1, pp. 89–92.
Record No. 4805  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: In German  |  RWHL
Describes newly available gem-quality blue sapphires from Malawi. The material has refractive indices of 1.762–1.770, birefringence of 0.008, and specific gravity of 3.97–3.99. Chemical analyses detected FeO, TiO and Cr₂O₃, while absorption spectroscopy indicates that the blue coloration results principally from Fe²⁺–Ti⁴⁺ intervalence charge transfer, together with Fe³⁺ absorption. Microscopic examination revealed lamellar twinning and inclusions of boehmite, rutile and zircon. The report supplements earlier studies of red and orange corundum from Malawi and documents the occurrence there of transparent blue gem-quality sapphire.

Saphirs et rubis de Tanzanie

Sapphires and rubies of Tanzania
Journal Article
García Giménez, R. and Leguey, S. (1990) Saphirs et rubis de Tanzanie. [Sapphires and rubies of Tanzania] Revue de Gemmologie A.F.G., No. 102, March, pp. 6–8.
Record No. 4786  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: in French  |  RWHL
Describes rubies, blue sapphires and other colored corundums from Tanzania, with particular attention to their gemological characteristics. The authors characterize the colors quantitatively using a chromaticity-coordinate diagram and examine the stones’ absorption spectra and mineral inclusions. The study compares the different color varieties and relates their optical behavior to their composition, providing analytical data useful for characterizing Tanzanian gem corundum. A contemporary Journal of Gemmology abstract specifically notes the treatment of color, inclusions and absorption spectra.

Record No. 4737  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  RWHL
Uranium–lead isotope dating of two zircon inclusions in sapphires from the Central Province, New South Wales, yields ages of 35.9 ± 1.9 and 33.7 ± 2.1 million years, consistent with the broader timing of volcanism in the region, as indicated by potassium–argon ages of 19–38 Ma and zircon fission track ages of 2–49 Ma; this temporal correlation, along with the frequent association of corundum with alkali basaltic provinces, supports a genetic relationship between large corundum crystal growth and alkali basaltic magma generation, although experimental efforts to crystallize corundum from corundum-bearing basaltic compositions have failed, and the inclusion of incompatible-element-rich minerals such as zircon, columbite, thorite, uranium pyrochlore, and alkali feldspar suggests that corundum crystallization requires unusually enriched melts with high volatile and incompatible element contents—conditions not typical of standard basaltic compositions—implying that sapphire formation occurs through a complex process involving residual melts or fluids enriched in volatiles and incompatible elements, with the crystallized assemblages subsequently transported to the surface by ascending magmas; the effectiveness of this process likely governs whether a basaltic province yields economically viable concentrations of sapphires.

Describes the emerald deposits of Santa Terezinha de Goiás, Brazil, presenting evidence for their stratiform occurrence and documenting the stones’ gemological properties, chemistry and inclusions. Refractive indices reach 1.593–1.602, with birefringence of 0.008–0.010, reported as the highest values then observed in emerald. Chromium and iron show the highest mean concentrations among Brazilian emeralds. Fluid inclusions are generally very small. Mineral inclusions include spinel, carbonates, mica, talc, amphibole and pyrite, with rutile, hematite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and ilmenite also recorded.

Colorless faceted topaz containing acicular inclusions has been marketed as “rutilated” topaz, though earlier studies revealed that these inclusions are actually limonite-stained etched dislocation channels rather than rutile. This article discusses the application of heat treatment to convert the limonite staining into hematite, thereby enhancing the visibility and altering the color of the inclusions to make them appear more prominent.

Record No. 5988  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: In German  |  RWHL
A brief gemological report on spinels from Tanzania’s Umba Valley, occurring in pink, red, orangish red and bluish violet colors. The specimens examined had refractive indices of 1.713–1.718 and specific gravities of 3.54–3.69. Spectroscopic examination was used to investigate the causes of the different colors. The note documents the range of gem spinel then reaching the market from the Umba Valley and provides basic properties useful for characterizing this East African material.

Fluid and mineral inclusions in corundum from gem gravels in Sri Lanka

Journal Article

Record No. 4905  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  RWHL
Mineral and fluid inclusions were studied in seven gem corundums from gravels of three areas in Sri Lanka. All fluid inclusions are pure CO2. Microthermometry results on primary fluid inclusions suggest formation of corundum under granulite facies metamorphism (>630 ~ 5.5 kbar). Secondary fluid inclusions indicate different retrograde events of post-metamorphic cooling and uplift for different source areas.

Orangefarbene korunde aus Malawi

Orange corundum from Malawi
Journal Article
Henn, U., Bank, H. and Bank, F.H. (1989) Orangefarbene korunde aus Malawi. [Orange corundum from Malawi] Zeitschrift der Deutschen Gemmologischen Gesellschaft, Vol. 38, No. 4, pp. 164–166.
Record No. 4804  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: In German  |  RWHL
Describes orange gem-quality corundum from the Chimwadzulu Hills of southern Malawi, near the Mozambique border. The material has refractive indices of nε = 1.763–1.765 and nω = 1.771–1.773, birefringence of 0.008, and specific gravity of 3.97–3.98. Microscopic features include twin lamellae, healed fractures and rounded doubly refractive mineral inclusions. Spectroscopic examination indicates that the orange coloration results from the superposition of absorptions due to Fe³⁺ and Cr³⁺. The authors contrast this mechanism with orange Sri Lankan corundum whose coloration may be produced by color centers.

Record No. 1964  |  Sinkankas/Born No.: NIS/NIB  |  Language: In German  |  RWHL
Examines the Australian hydrothermally grown synthetic emerald marketed as the “Pool Emerald.” The authors describe its gemological properties, chemical composition, absorption characteristics and diagnostic internal features, with emphasis on separation from natural emerald. Pool emeralds show features characteristic of hydrothermal growth, including distinctive growth structures and inclusions. Chemical analysis indicates relatively high chlorine and magnesium contents, while alkalis are low or absent—features later studies also found characteristic of this material. The paper provides practical criteria for recognizing Pool synthetic emeralds and documents an important Australian contribution to commercial hydrothermal emerald synthesis during the 1980s.
